Migration and mobility

The governorate of Medenine decided to close one of the three centres for asylum seekers in Zarzis. Announced on 5 October, this decision was taken due to the pressure from the town’s inhabitants who are demanding that asylum seekers be transferred out of the town.

A hundred people have already been transferred to other reception centres managed by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which also offers to help migrants “find accommodation outside urban areas,” according to the coordinator of the office in Zarzis, Naoufel Tounsi.

Chiara Cavalcanti, from the UNHCR office in Tunis, said that asylum seekers who do not wish to be housed in the centres will receive financial compensation to find their own accommodation. She also stated that the closure of the centre is “temporary,” recalling that “UNHCR recognises the right of refugees to housing and does its best to guarantee it, even in difficult circumstances.”
