In a speech broadcast Thursday, February 18, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, decreed a presidential pardon for dozens of Hirak detainees. He, also, announced a cabinet reshuffle that will take place in 48 hours, the dissolution of parliament, and early parliamentary elections.

While the National Committee for the Liberation of Detainees (CNLD) announced that around 70 people are currently imprisoned in Algeria in relation to the Hirak protests and individual freedoms, the president declared that “the blessed Hirak saved Algeria. I decided to grant the presidential pardon to about 30 people for whom a court decision had been pronounced, as well as to others for whom no verdict was pronounced. Between 55 and 60 people will join their families from this evening or tomorrow.”

With the dissolution of parliament, the Algerian legislative elections, which were originally scheduled to be held in 2022, will be held towards the end of the current year.

Regarding the cabinet reshuffle, President Tebboune explained that the reshuffle would concern sectors which have shown shortcomings that are being felt by the people and us.”
