Sexual harassment is now a crime punishable by at least five years of prison in Egypt and from a minimum of one and a half years. The change comes after the Egyptian House of Representatives approved an amendment on Sunday 11 July that considers the offence of sexual harassment against women as a crime.

The minimum sentence for the crime of sexual harassment can be increased to seven years of prison in particular circumstances, such as carrying a weapon or collective harassment.

In 2013, 99.3% of Egyptian women interviewed in a survey conducted by the United Nations (UN) said they had been victims of different forms of harassment.
