Head of Frontex Fabrice Leggeri has resigned to the board of the EU border guard agency, which accepted it on Friday 29 April.

The resignation comes in the wake of an investigation launched in January 2021 by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) into allegedly illegal cases of pushbacks of migrants.

Accused of turning a blind eye on the illegal pushbacks of migrant boats to Turkey in the Aegean Sea by Greek coastguards, Frontex has come under heavy criticism from many NGOs.

Erik Marquardt, a German Green MEP, had previously stated that OLAF’s preliminary report “reveals that Frontex’s administration was aware of the human rights violations and deliberately avoided reporting them.”

It is worth noting that the European agency, through its administration, has always denied all accusations despite journalistic investigations and recurrent complaints from migrants.
