The NGO Sea Watch International has announced that its humanitarian vessel Sea Watch has been authorised by the Italian authorities to disembark 446 migrants rescued in recent days. The ship was able to dock on Saturday 1 January 2022 in the port of Pozzallo, Sicily.

On 28 December, the authorities had authorised the ship Geo Barents, chartered by Doctors Without Borders, to dock in the Sicilian port of Augusta. Over 550 people were on board.

According to the Italian Ministry of the Interior, 67,040 migrants have already landed in Italy in 2021, compared to 34,154 in 2020, but much less than in 2016, which saw a record 181,436 arrivals. According to figures from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as of 26 December, more than 114,500 migrants have managed to reach Europe since the beginning of the year, especially in Italy, Greece, Spain, Cyprus, and Malta.
