In a televised interview, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced that he had enacted a new law lifting the immunity from “anyone” that could be involved in last year’s Beirut Port Explosion.
In the interview, the Prime Minister recalled that the constitution provided that any senior government official should be tried by a special court.
It is worth noting that on 29 September, Judge Tareq Bitar, who is investigating the explosion in the port of Beirut, was suspended following a complaint filed against him by former Interior Minister Nohad al-Mashnouk, who is suspected of involvement in the tragedy.
The explosion in the port of Beirut on 4 August 2020 left hundreds dead and injured. Since then, the investigation has been hardly progressing.
