Hundreds of Lebanese protested on Wednesday 29 September in front of the Beirut courthouse. The protestors, including relatives of the victims of the explosion, protested against the suspension of Judge Tareq Bitar who is investigating the Beirut port explosion.
The suspension of the judge follows a complaint against him by former Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk, who is suspected of involvement in the tragedy.
In reaction to the decision, France stressed that the Lebanese have the “right to know” the truth and that the Lebanese justice system must “work in full transparency and be free from any political interference.”
The French diplomatic spokeswoman said that “it is up to the Lebanese authorities to allow the investigation to continue with the necessary financial and human resources, in order to shed light on what happened on 4 August 2020, in accordance with the legitimate expectations of the Lebanese people.”
