The former Prime Minister and one of the main leaders of the Lebanese Sunni community Saad Hariri announced, on Monday 24 January 2022, his withdrawal from political life. During a press briefing in Beirut, Hariri called on his political party not to present candidates in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for next May.
“I am convinced that there is no room for any positive opportunity for Lebanon in light of Iranian influence, international disarray, national division, sectarianism, and the collapse of the state,” the former prime minister explained.
Following this announcement, several people protested by blocking the main roads of the capital. The Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, said that the decision of Saad Hariri was a “sad page for the country and for him personally.”
