572 migrants were rescued by the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking between Thursday and Sunday. The ship is currently searching for a safe port for the migrants rescued in the Mediterranean.
In a tweet posted on Sunday evening, the NGO SOS Méditerranée said that the latest rescue operation resulted in the rescue of 369 migrants who were on board a single boat.
The next day, the Tunisian Maritime Guard recovered 21 bodies of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and rescued another 50 people off the coast of Sfax. The spokesman for the Tunisian National Guard, Houcem Eddine Jebabli, said that 43 other migrants have been missing since 3 July following the sinking of their boat, which left Libya on the night of 28 to 29 June.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced that at least 723 people have died in the central Mediterranean trying to reach European shores since the beginning of this year.
