Security and countering violence

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) announced that the terrorist group Islamic State (IS) launched an assault on a prison controlled by Kurdish forces in north-eastern Syria on Thursday, releasing an unknown number of jihadists.

The NGO said the attack was launched on Thursday night against the large Ghuwayran prison in Al-Hasakah, which houses thousands of Jihadi suspected. With an extensive network of sources in Syria, SOHR said 18 Kurdish security forces and 16 members of the EI were killed in the assault.

Recalling that the Ghuwayran prison houses some 3,500 suspected IS members, including leaders of the group, the NGO said the attack caused chaos in Al-Hasakah, causing power cuts and forcing people to flee the area.

The Syrian Democratic Forces announced that it had arrested 89 prisoners who had tried to flee following the attack.
